SSRIs help improve mood and reduce anxiety symptoms by increasing levels of serotonin, a natural chemical messenger in the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indications <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Major depressive episodes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/strong> \u2013 a condition with intrusive, repetitive thoughts that can lead to compulsive behaviours and mental acts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bulimia nervosa<\/strong> \u2013 used to reduce <strong>binge-eating and purging<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_it_works\"><\/span>How it works <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nerve cells in the brain communicate using chemicals like <strong>serotonin<\/strong>. After serotonin delivers a message, it is normally reabsorbed into the nerve cell. <strong>Fluoxetine blocks this \u201creuptake\u201d step<\/strong>, so more serotonin stays available in the spaces between nerve cells. Over time, this can <strong>lift mood, reduce anxiety, and lessen compulsive behaviours<\/strong>. The effect is <strong>not immediate<\/strong>\u2014<strong>it usually takes about 2 weeks<\/strong>, and sometimes longer, to notice benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_should_NOT_use_this_medicine\"><\/span>Who should NOT use this medicine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do not take LORIEN if:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are <strong>allergic<\/strong> to fluoxetine or any ingredient in LORIEN (see <em>What the medicine contains<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have <strong>severe kidney failure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are <strong>taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)<\/strong> used for depression (irreversible, non-selective MAOIs or reversible MAOIs type A like <strong>moclobemide<\/strong>) or have recently taken them. Serious, sometimes fatal reactions (serotonin syndrome) can occur.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start LORIEN <strong>only 2 weeks after<\/strong> stopping an <strong>irreversible MAOI<\/strong> (e.g., <strong>tranylcypromine<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LORIEN may be started <strong>the day after<\/strong> stopping certain <strong>reversible<\/strong> MAOIs (e.g., <strong>moclobemide<\/strong>, <strong>linezolid<\/strong>, <strong>methylene blue<\/strong>)\u2014but you must be <strong>carefully monitored<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do <strong>not<\/strong> take any <strong>irreversible, non-selective MAOI<\/strong> for <strong>at least 5 weeks after<\/strong> stopping LORIEN. If you\u2019ve taken LORIEN for a long time or at high doses, your doctor may advise an even <strong>longer<\/strong> gap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are taking <strong>thioridazine<\/strong> now or have taken it in the last <strong>5 weeks<\/strong> (risk of serious heart rhythm problems).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are <strong>under 18 years<\/strong> of age (safety and efficacy not established; higher risk of certain psychiatric side effects in this age group).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are taking <strong>metoprolol for heart failure<\/strong> (risk of your heartbeat becoming too slow).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stop LORIEN and seek medical advice immediately if you develop<\/strong> a <strong>rash<\/strong>, <strong>itching<\/strong>, <strong>swollen lips\/face<\/strong>, or <strong>shortness of breath<\/strong>\u2014these can indicate an allergic reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Warnings_and_precautions_Read_before_use\"><\/span>Warnings and precautions (Read before use)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell your doctor <strong>before<\/strong> starting LORIEN if any of the following apply to you, or if they occur while taking it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Seizures\/epilepsy:<\/strong> If seizures start or become more frequent, contact your doctor\u2014LORIEN may need to be stopped.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>History of mania:<\/strong> If you develop an episode of abnormally elevated mood or over-activity (<strong>mania<\/strong>), contact your doctor\u2014treatment may need to be stopped.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diabetes:<\/strong> Dose adjustments to insulin or other antidiabetic medicines may be required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liver problems:<\/strong> Your doctor may adjust the dose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heart problems<\/strong> or <strong>low resting heart rate<\/strong>; <strong>salt depletion<\/strong> from <strong>prolonged vomiting\/diarrhoea<\/strong> or <strong>diuretics<\/strong>\u2014this can increase risks, including low sodium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Glaucoma (raised eye pressure).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT)<\/strong>\u2014you will need careful monitoring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bleeding disorders<\/strong> (e.g., von Willebrand disease, haemophilia A\/B) or if you <strong>bruise easily<\/strong> or develop <strong>unusual bleeding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pregnancy<\/strong> or plans to become pregnant (see <em>Pregnancy, planning pregnancy, and breastfeeding<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tamoxifen<\/strong> use (for breast cancer)\u2014fluoxetine may reduce its effect; your doctor may consider alternative antidepressants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restlessness\/akathisia:<\/strong> If you feel unable to sit or stand still, tell your doctor; increasing the dose may worsen it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Serotonin syndrome \/ Neuroleptic malignant syndrome:<\/strong> Rare but serious. <strong>Seek urgent help<\/strong> if you develop <strong>fever<\/strong>, <strong>muscle stiffness or tremor<\/strong>, <strong>sweating<\/strong>, <strong>fast heartbeat<\/strong>, <strong>confusion<\/strong>, <strong>irritability<\/strong>, or <strong>severe agitation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sexual dysfunction:<\/strong> Issues such as reduced sex drive or difficulties with sexual function can occur and <strong>have sometimes persisted after stopping<\/strong> treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buprenorphine (or other opioids):<\/strong> Using these with LORIEN can trigger <strong>serotonin syndrome<\/strong>\u2014monitor for symptoms listed above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thoughts of self-harm:<\/strong> Depression and anxiety can be associated with suicidal thoughts, especially <strong>early in treatment<\/strong> and in <strong>adults under 25<\/strong>. If you have thoughts about harming yourself, <strong>contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately<\/strong>. Consider asking a relative or friend to help monitor your mood and behaviour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Children and adolescents (&lt;18 years):<\/strong> Safety and efficacy have <strong>not<\/strong> been established. This age group is at <strong>increased risk<\/strong> of suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts and hostility (aggression, oppositional behaviour, anger). Only <strong>limited data<\/strong> exist on long-term effects on growth and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Driving and using machines:<\/strong> Headaches, visual disturbances, and <strong>fits<\/strong> have been reported. Do <strong>not<\/strong> drive or use machinery <strong>until you know<\/strong> how LORIEN affects you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alcohol:<\/strong> <strong>Do not drink alcohol<\/strong> while taking LORIEN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Food:<\/strong> You may take LORIEN <strong>with or without food<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lactose warning (capsules):<\/strong> LORIEN <strong>capsules<\/strong> contain lactose. If you have been told you are <strong>intolerant to some sugars<\/strong>, speak to your doctor before using the <strong>capsules<\/strong>. (The <strong>tablets are sugar-free<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pregnancy_planning_pregnancy_and_breastfeeding\"><\/span>Pregnancy, planning pregnancy, and breastfeeding<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pregnancy:<\/strong> <strong>Safety in pregnancy has not been demonstrated.<\/strong> Speak to your doctor before use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breastfeeding:<\/strong> Fluoxetine <strong>passes into breast milk<\/strong> and can cause side effects in babies\u2014<strong>do not breastfeed<\/strong> while using LORIEN.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fertility:<\/strong> <strong>No impact has been observed as yet<\/strong> in humans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interactions\"><\/span>Interactions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always tell your healthcare provider about <strong>all<\/strong> medicines you use, including complementary or traditional remedies.
